The Edward G. Njie Scholarship Fund was established by family and friends for a man who was dedicated and passionate about education as well as passionate about helping those in need and less fortunate. Mr. Njie, as he was known to his students and mentees; Edu or Eddy, to his loved ones, and Papa to his children, was born in Banjul, The Gambia. He was the third child of six of the late Gabriel Daur Njie and Veronica Bobb-Njie. He lived at 28 Perseverance Street, Banjul until his sudden death on October 5, 2004.
Mr Njie started school at St. John’s Infants and St. Augustine’s Primary Schools. He graduated from St. Augustine’s Secondary and was appointed as an unqualified teacher in the mid to late 1950’s. He taught at Fulabantang and Njongon before going to Yundum College to become a qualified teacher and graduated in 1963. After his graduation, Mr. Njie taught at various schools in the Gambia. His passion and dedication to his profession as a teacher led him to secure a government scholarship in education at Winneba, Ghana. Upon returning from Ghana, he served in many senior positions including Armitage High School, Kaur, Brikama, Gunjur, and finally Banjul Secondary School, where he retired as the Head Teacher. After retiring, Mr. Njie continued to be interested in education and assisting those in need. This took him to the President Award Scheme in Bakau as the Center Manager until his sudden death.
He was actively involved and was the International Secretary for the International Fellowship of Scouts and Guides and member of the Gambia Scouts Council. He was the Public Relations Officer for the Vocations and Skills Centers.
Throughout his adult life, Mr. Edward G. Njie, mentored and supported students all over the country. Education has always been his passion and he made sure that others around him took the opportunity to progress intellectually. After his death, one of his students and mentees studying in the UK sent him an email. This was dated October 12, one week after his death. Apparently, the student was unaware that he passed.
In addition to his passion for education and other pursuits, Mr. Njie took the time to dedicate to his spirituality. He was a devout Catholic, but respectful of other religions. This was reflected in an email to one of his Muslim students encouraging them to take the time to pray five times a day.
There are many stories to tell about how Mr. Njie touched the lives of others around him in his quiet and humble way. He believed in hard work and that hard work and education always pay off. He did not tolerate easy rides or laziness. He was a man with integrity and honor and extended himself to those who needed him. Reflecting on his life, he served humanity throughout his life. Mr Njie was a very humble man, quietly proud, a disciplinarian, and a no-nonsense man. He lived a simple, humble, and rich life in all dimensions that really count.
This Fund will assist and support students in need and continue what Mr. Njie was always passionate about – helping students achieve their educational goals by nurturing their potential.
